FREDERICKSBURG, Va. (WUSA9) -- The Fredericksburg Police Department says 60-year-old John Wesley Jeffries has been arrested.

Police apprehended Jeffries on Wednesday at about 3:50 p.m. at the 2000 block of Lafayette Blvd. in Fredericksburg.

Law enforcement from Fauquier to Spotsylvania county were searching for 60-year-old John Wesley Jeffries who was wanted for several violent crimes in the Fredericksburg area.

Authorities believe Jeffries is also responsible for the death of an elderly couple in The Plains over the weekend.

Eighty-year-old Nelson Slack and his 74-year-old wife Ethel had lived in their home for nearly fifty years.

But on Sunday, that home is where they were found dead by Fauquier County Sheriff's deputies.

"At this point, the autopsies are under way. All I can tell you is that there appeared to be trauma to the upper bodies of both victims,"Lt. James Hartman, Fauquier Co. Sheriff's Office said.

A neighbor who lives on the same street as the Slacks was surprised by the news.

"Really nice people, they're in their 80s, retired, honest, good people in the neighborhood, I never heard a bad word about them
and every time I saw them they made an effort to wave and say hi. They were just pleasant people and everyone I've talked to is really torn up about it."

The question now, who would want them dead and why?

The sheriff's office hopes John Jeffries might have some answers. He's registered as a violent sex offender in Virginia and is currently wanted in Spotsylvania county for three felonies - abduction, strangling, and malicious wounding.

In the meantime, the family of the victims are still reeling from the loss. One of their sons declined to talk on camera, but told WUSA9 they just want justice for their mom and dad.

"It's just a shame, an absolute tragedy, didn't need to happen."
