WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- Woodrow Wilson High School in Northwest D.C. is holding its 2nd Annual Pride Day Celebration on Wednesday.
Wilson High School Principal Pete Cahall came out as gay to his students at the event.
"I am glad to be an ally of the LGBTQ community, and I'm very proud that we have been a true leader in advancing causes like marriage equality and transgender awareness and equality here in the District since I've been in public office," Mayor Gray said while attending Pride Day. "I especially celebrate the LGBTQ community today, and I'm excited – as always – to take part in the Capital Pride festivities this weekend."
Five days later, Westboro Baptist Church is threatening to picket outside the school. Westboro's website says members plan to protest outside the school, waiting for students as they arrive.
D.C. Councilmember David Catania says he called the school to quote, "thank them for standing up for the values of acceptance and equality that define the District of Columbia."
He also encourages residents to stand with the students at Woodrow Wilson High School.
