BLADENSBURG, Md. (WUSA9) -- A lawsuit has been filed over the Peace Cross war memorial in Prince George's County. Some say it honors the lives of military service men and woman. Others have a different view of the 40-foot memorial cross in Bladensburg. They say it's a religious symbol.

A lawsuit has been filed over the Peace Cross War Memorial in Prince George's County.

The group filed the suit over the war memorial saying it's a religious symbol that shouldn't sit on state land.

The cross was dedicated in 1925 to honor the 49 Prince George's County servicemen that died in WWII. The Maryland National Capital Park and Planning Commission controls the land where it sits. They are contesting the lawsuit.

In response to the suit, a petition has been filed to save the cross, saying, "the cross is a major landmark in the area, but most importantly, is the fact that it memorializes those who made the supreme sacrifice."

The group that wants the cross moved says they don't want it destroyed; they just want it moved.

A Facebook group called "Save the Peace Cross" already has more than 3,000 members. A rally is planned for Saturday for those who want to keep the cross.
