WELCOME, Md. (WUSA9) -- Police say a man they had served a criminal summons hours before broke into a store and stole vodka and cigarettes on Thursday.

According to Charles County Sheriff's Office authorities, an officer was patrolling at 12:19 a.m. Thursday when he noticed the glass on the front door of a business in the 7000 block of Port Tobacco Road in Welcome was smashed. The door was also open.

Additional officers responded to the scene to check the building. They found no one inside.

When they checked the security camera footage, however, officers saw a man break the glass, enter the store, go behind a counter. He took seven bottles of Burnett Vodka and seven packs of Maverick cigarettes before fleeing the scene.

Authorities say officers recognized the thief: they had just served a criminal summons to earlier in the day for an unrelated crime. Officers went back to 20-year-old Christopher Lee Howdyshell's home. Authorities tell us officers found the stolen liquor and cigarettes there.

Howdyshell was charged with burglary and theft.
