UPPER MARLBORO, Md. (WUSA9) -- According to the Brown-Ulman campaign, former U.S. president Bill Clinton has endorsed Anthony Brown for Governor of Maryland.

According to campaign officials, President Clinton will visit Maryland during the second week of May to support the Brown-Ulman campaign. Details will be provided about the event at a later date.

Clinton released the following statement on Tuesday:

"Anthony Brown's lengthy record of public service to our nation and the state of Maryland is a powerful testament to his character and leadership...As Lt. Governor, Anthony has worked to create thousands of jobs, to make quality health care more accessible and affordable, to secure passage of some of the nation's toughest gun safety laws, to protect women and children from domestic violence, and to make record investments in Maryland's public schools. He is uniquely qualified to lead Maryland, and I am proud to support him for Governor."

Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown said in a statement that he was honored by the endorsement.

"His leadership resulted in one of the greatest periods of economic growth and opportunity this nation has ever seen," said Brown. "President Clinton and I share a common vision of a strong American middle class and economic opportunities for every family. I am proud to have President Clinton's support as we work to build a better Maryland for more Marylanders."
