COLUMBIA, Md. (WUSA9) -- Howard County firefighters were at the scene of an apartment fire in the 11300 block of Little Patuxent Parkway on Friday.

An official says that firefighters rescued several people from a three-story garden style apartment complex.

Firefighters had to call for a second alarm because of the heavy fire throughout the building, an official said.

Hickory Ridge Road and Little Sparrow Road were both closed because of the firefighting equipment, according to authorities.

The Red Cross helped a total of 16 families that were displaced because of the fire. Those families were staying in the community clubhouse on the property because of the weather, an official said.

One person was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation, according to an official. No firefighters were hurt.
