STAFFORD, Va. (WUSA9) -- A man is in jail after police say he shot an acquaintance on his front porch on Sunday night. The acquaintance was later found dead in the front yard.
The Stafford County Sheriff's Office authorities say 62-year-old Mark Howsare was charged with first-degree murder in the death of 35-year-old William Conner.
According to authorities, Conner had gone to a store to return an air mattress for Howsare but was unable to do so. Conner then returned to Howsare's home in the 600 block of Belle Plains Road at approximately 10:15 p.m. and found he was locked out of the house. Authorities say he was on the front porch and started to argue with Howsare who was still inside. At some point, Howsare opened the door and shot a handgun several times, according to authorities. Some of the shots hit Conner.
Authorities say a friend at the scene when deputies arrived told them her friend, Conner, had staggered off of the porch. He was found dead in the yard of the home.
Deputies formed a perimeter around Howsare's home and tried several times to contact him, according to authorities. A helicopter from the Maryland State Police was called in to assist with the search. Authorities say shortly after 1:25 Monday morning, Mark Howsare was taken into custody in his bathroom. They say he was still armed with a handgun.
Howsare is being held without bond at the Rappahannock Regional Jail.
