Hobart, Australia (SportsNetwork.com) - Reigning champion Elena Vesnina posted an opening-round victory Tuesday at the Hobart International tennis event, a final hardcourt Australian Open tune-up.

The third-seeded Russian handled Puerto Rican Monica Puig 6-4, 6-4 in a match that was suspended because of rain here on Monday at Hobart International Tennis Centre.

Vesnina, who beat German and 2012 titlist Mona Barthel in last year's finale, will meet Spanish qualifier Estrella Cabeza Candela on Wednesday.

In another bout involving a seed, No. 8 Bojana Jovanovski of Serbia overcame Aussie wild card Olivia Rogowska 3-6, 6-2, 6-0 to reach the quarterfinals. Another second-round affair saw American Alison Riske hold off Aussie wild card Casey Dellacqua 7-5, 4-6, 6-3.

One other first-round match saw Aussie wild card Storm Sanders drill Chinese Peng Shuai 6-2, 6-2. Peng was a runner-up in her native China last week.
