ALEXANDRIA, Va. (WUSA9) -- Police in Alexandria have charged a woman for financial exploitation of a mentally incapacitated person.
Police say 29-year-old Tisa Dorsey of Greenbelt, Md.stole more than 100 checks an elderly person, spending approximately $87,000 during a 14-month period.
Dorsey was the victim's cleaning lady. She was arrested last week, say police.
Police noted in a press release that "Financial Exploitation of Mentally Incapacitated Person (18.2-178.1) is a law that went into effect on July 1, 2013, and this is the first time it has been charged in the City of Alexandria. The addition of this law is very significant in that it assists residents who may not be able to help themselves, and are sometimes at the mercy of their caregivers."
