COLLEGE PARK, Md. (WUSA9) -- The Testudo statue at University of Maryland was surrounded by flames overnight.

Wednesday, the statue is still in tact. Students have left various items at the statue, including a bandage on Testudo's nose.

According to a release by university police spokesman Maj. Marc Limansky, a student police aide reported a small fire in front of the library around 1 a.m.

University officials say they believe the incident was accidental.

It's a tradition for students to leave offerings at the the statue in front of McKeldin Library for luck during finals.

About an hour before the fire, a student saw a croissant equipped with two lit candles.

University PresidentWallace D. Loh tweeted "I am happy to report that there was no damage to Testudo in front of McKeldin. Testudo is ready to continue supporting our #UMD community!"
