CULPEPER, Va. (WUSA9) -- A man was arrested for stalking Tuesday at a Virginia Elementary School.

Police say David Hernandez Shumaker, 28, of 322 Rochelle School Lane in Rochelle, Va., attempted to abduct a woman at A.G. Richardson Elementary School in Culpeper, Va.

Officials were called to the school at 8:40 a.m. after a female victim returned to her vehicle in the school's parking lot to find the suspect hiding in the back seat of her car.

The suspect was wearing a ski mask and displayed a knife when he told her to drive the vehicle away from the school, police say.

The suspect was distracted by a phone ringing and persons nearby in the parking lot, according to police. The victim took advantage of the distraction and exited the vehicle.

The victim ran to the school and entered the administration office just inside the front door. The suspect had chased after the victim but no longer possessed the knife.

Police say the suspect and victim are acquaintances. Shumaker faces charges of abduction, carjacking, wearing a mask in public, possessing a weapon on school property and stalking.
