LINTHICUM, Md. (WUSA9) -- A mother was arrested and charged with child neglect after her 2-month-old was left at a hotel clerk desk, while she engaged in prostitution, police said.

Leah Lillian Ellison, 32, of Hagerstown, and her friend we at the Microtel Hotel at the 1100 block of Winterson Road, in Linthicum, when the crime happened, police said.

"The investigation revealed that a female who was renting a room and staying with the child's mother left the child with the desk clerk and then left the hotel with a male subject. Officers were able to positively identify the renter and the mother. Inside the rented room, officers observed items indicating possible prostitution activity," police said.

Ellison told police that she had left her baby with her friend, while she was visiting a person in the hotel room, police said.

"The mother [Ellison] was arrested and charged with child neglect. Additional investigation revealed that she was working as a prostitute out of the room. Charges are also pending against the friend of the child's mother," police said.

Child protective services took custody of the child.
