(CBS NEWS) -- Members of Congress and the lobbyists lurking among them on Capitol Hill are considered some of the least honest or ethical professionals, according to a new survey, coming in below car salesmen and advertisers.
Just 8 percent of Americans in the Gallup poll said that members of Congress have high or very high honesty and ethical standards, while 66 percent said they have low or very low standards. Just 6 percent of Americans said lobbyists have high or very high standards, while 56 said they have low or very low standards.
The public's dim views shouldn't be too surprising, given that Congress' public approval ratings sunk to new lows this fall in the wake of the government shutdown.
The Gallup poll, conducted Dec. 5-8, surveyed 1,031 adults nationally and has a 4 percent margin of error. It found that nurses are considered the most ethical professionals, with 82 percent of Americans saying they have high or very high ethical standards.
