New York, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Major League Soccer confirmed Thursday that reigning European and Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich will face the MLS All-Stars in the 2014 MLS All-Star Game at Jeld-Wen Field.
The showcase match, slated for Aug. 6, marks the 11th time in its 19-year history that an international club will take on the MLS All-Stars, who have a 6-3-1 record in this format.
In addition to honoring the best players in MLS, the game has featured successful, world-renowned clubs such as Manchester United (2010 & 2011), Everton (2009), Chelsea (2006 & 2012), AS Roma (2012) and Chivas de Guadalajara (2003).
"The AT&T MLS All-Star Game is one of the premier soccer events on the North American sports calendar," said MLS Commissioner Don Garber. "We are pleased that Bayern Munich, one of the most prominent and successful clubs in the world, will be part of our All-Star celebration.
"This will be the first MLS special event in Portland since the Timbers joined the League in 2011. One of the great stories in Major League Soccer over the last number of years has been the enormous fan passion, civic support and stadium atmosphere in Portland. We look forward to showcasing this phenomenon to the rest of the world."
Bayern will bring a level of pedigree to the All-Star Game that can be rivaled by only a handful of clubs around the world. The Bavarians claimed their fifth Champions League crown last season while cruising to the Bundesliga title and collecting the German Cup to complete a historic treble.
Led by world-class talents like Franck Ribery, Arjen Robben, Mario Mandzukic, Thomas Muller, Philipp Lahm, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Mario Gotze, Bayern is primed for another successful campaign as the club is unbeaten through 15 Bundesliga matches and destined for the knockout round of the Champions League.
