Preliminary investigation reveals that prior to the crash, patrol officers had been called to the 7000 block of Walker Mill Road for the report of shots fired, police said. Responding officers tried to pull over a car leaving the area of the reported shooting.
Instead of stopping, the driver, Hayes, took off. The officers began to pursue the car, and as the suspect continued to flee at a high rate of speed, he was able to pull away from the officers, police said.
The suspect turned off his headlights and moments later entered the intersection where he slammed into the victims' car, according to police. After the crash, Hayes ran from the scene. Patrol officers found him a short time later hiding. The car he was driving had been stolen.
