WOODBRIDGE, Va. (WUSA9) -- Prince William County police have charged a man accused of shooting himself in a park and then filing a false police report stating that someone shot him.
Steven Sanchez of Woodbridge is charged with reckless handling of a firearm and filing a false police report.
Police say on Nov. 23 officers responded to Veterans Park at 14300 Veterans Dr. in Woodbridgeto investigate a shooting.According to police, Sanchezinitially reported to police that he was jogging through the park when an unknown man attempted to rob him. Sanchez stated that the man displayed a handgun and shot him, say police.
Sanchezwas flown to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
No shooter was found andno property was reported stolen, say police.Detectives alsodiscovered inconsistencies in the initial reporting of the incident and eventually learned Sanchez was not robbed and that he had shot himself in the park, according to police.
Sanchez was arrested on Thursday.
