LEESBURG, Va. (WUSA9) -- The murder of a woman whose skeletal remains were found off of Route 653more than two decades agois being reexamined by the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office Cold Case Unit.

Authorities made the announcement on Wednesday that they would reexamine the case of CharlottePowell of Pennsylvania.

According to sheriff's office authorities, 27-year-old Charlotte Powell was last seen by her family in July 1987. Her remains were found in the woods near the gas and power lines off of Route 653 (Shreve Mill Road) on December 8, 1987. It is believed she was raped and murdered, say authorities.

Authorities add that Charlotte lived in Pennsylvania and was known to hitchhike. She may have traveled in Maryland, D.C. and Virginia. "She was described by her mother and sister as a free spirit," according to authorities in a press release.

The Cold Case Unit is asking for the public'shelp, hoping someone will comeforward with information that could help them solve the case...and bringsome closure to thePowell family.
