RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Republican state Sen. Mark Obenshain has petitioned for a recount in the nearly knotted race for attorney general in Virginia.
Trailing Democratic state Sen. Mark Herring by 165 votes, Obenshain attorneys filed the petition Wednesday with Richmond Circuit Court. The race is the closest in modern Virginia political history and the recount is likely to be the state's most extensive.
The petition will trigger a recount of votes across the state. It will ultimately end with a recount court comprised of the chief judge of Richmond Circuit Court and two judges appointed by the chief justice of the Supreme Court of Virginia.
Attorneys for Obenshain outlined the various steps to a recount during a conference call with reporters on Wednesday. They promised a civil process in resolving disputed ballots.
