WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- Firefighters saved a $450 million NASA satellite after a fire outside theNaval Research Laboratory, officials said.

The incident happened at 1:00 p.m. on Monday. When crews arrived, they saw smoke from the top of a tractor-trailer truck. They were able to put out the fire and at the same time save the satellite.

Initial investigation reveals that the fire started from an 'environmental control unit which was providing heat to a NASA Magnetospheric Multiscale Satellite being transported on the trailer from NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt. Md'.
