WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- Busboys and Poets owner Andy Shallal will run for D.C. mayor.
Shallal announced his candidacy Tuesday morning at Ben's Chili Bowl, just up the street from his restaurant's U St. corridor location.
"There's a lot in the city that could be made better," Shallal said. "We have one of the highest poverty rates in the country...homelessness is at an all-time high, and our schools, although they're showing good results, are still failing us because a lot of our kids are dropping out.
"We together can stop this bleeding of our most important resource, our people."
Among his ideas, the Busboys and Poets owner would like to lower the voting age to 17, consider free public transportation, and give one percent of the city budget to the arts, WUSA9's Bruce Johnson tweeted.
