Average First Frosts

Most of us have already planted mums, bought pumpkins and put out hay to get ready for fall. We have not yet had a frost warning for the immediate Metro Area yet and with high approaching seventy Friday frost warnings are still a ways off. There have been frost advisories in the mountains for Hagerstown and points west. We may have to deal with our first frost late next week.

Our friends in Garret County average a first frost by September seventh and are in peak fall color already. Washington County, most of the panhandle of West Virginia and points west to the eastern continental divide averages a first frost by October first. Our far northern and western suburbs, including Frederick, Maryland and Leesburg, Virginia, average a first frost by the tenth of October. The closer northern and western suburbs, including Rockville, Maryland and Fairfax, Virginia average a first frost around the twenty first of this month. Downtown doesn't average a first frost and a temp of thirty two degrees until November the seventh. Ironically the first frost on the eastern shore is earlier than the average first frost Downtown. Salisbury averages a first frost around the fourteenth of October.

Our earliest freeze was October the tenth way back in 1895. The latest freeze Downtown was December fourteenth 1980.

On this yesterday's date in 1988 Tropical Storm Joan continued its westward track in the extreme southern Caribbean Sea. This storm beat the upper wind and topographical odds and became a category four hurricane before hitting Nicaragua on October twenty second.
