WASHINGTON, DC (WUSA9) ---Nourish Nowworks to make sure freshfood won't have to be thrown away. Instead,the food mayreach peoplefacing hunger.
The non-profit organization offersarea restaurants and caterers the chance todonate their surplusmeals.
Withthe ongoing government shutdown, families withfurloughed workershave connectedwithNourish Now, according to Brett Meyers, founder and executive director of the 501 c(3) non-profit based in Montgomery County.
Seven familiesexperiencing furloughshave come forward. Meyers anticipates receiving more requests as the government shutdown continues.
Since its start in 2011, Nourish Now has collected and donated over 135,000 pounds of food.
The food reaches families, at-risk youth and low-income students who may not have enough food during the weekends.
