WASHINGTON (AP) - Federal workers who are furloughed because of the government shutdown are filing for unemployment benefits.

Najla Haywood, a spokeswoman for the D.C. Department of Employment Services, says all initial claims for unemployment should be filed online due to increased demand.

The agency says it's processing claims, but there might be delays for federal workers in order to verify their employment status while their offices are closed. There is a one-week waiting period before benefits are paid.

While many workers live in Maryland and Virginia, unemployment claims are filed where people work.

Maryland's Department of Labor says it received 4,000 unemployment claims from federal workers Tuesday. That's more than the state usually receives all year from federal workers.

Virginia's Employment Commission is providing a special paper application for federal workers.
