Obituary for Kathleen Nark Gaarde, 62:
Kathleen was born to the late JohnNarkand Lore Bourne, February 13th, 1951, in Chicago, Illinois. She attended catholic elementary school and Waller High School, all while living on Sedgwick Street. After high school graduation in 1968, Kathy began her higher education studies at Indian River Community College near Vero Beach, Florida;receiving her Associate Arts degree in 1970. She then went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts in Education at Florida State University in Tallahassee Florida. While there, she met her future husband and life partner, Douglass Gaarde. In 1972, they moved together to Tampa Florida so Douglass could finish his education at the University of South Florida. In 1975, they were married and moved to Northern Virginia.Kathleen joined the Naval Sea Systems Command in 1981 where she eventually reached her current position of financial analyst.
When not working and raising her family, Kathleen devoted her free time to the causes of animal welfare and conservation. She was a volunteer bluebird monitor at the Occoquan Bay National Wildlife Refuge. When she wasn't counting birds at the wildlife refuge, she could be found gardening and tending to the wildlife in her own backyard. She was looking forward to starting an orchid garden in her future retirement. Kathleen was also a devoted Washington Capitals hockey fan having had season tickets for the last 25+ years and was looking forward to opening night this October.
Kathleen was a devoted daughter, wife, and mother who always put the needs of her family and friends before herself, even if that meant rescheduling a vacation, or driving hours to visit loved ones after a long day of work.
Kathleen is survived by her husband, Douglass, and two children: Christopher Gaarde of Baltimore; and Jessica Gaarde of Woodbridge.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Virginia chapter of the Humane Society.
