Bangkok, Thailand (Sports Network) - Spanish veteran Feliciano Lopez was an easy first-round winner Monday at the Thailand Open.
The sixth-seeded left-hander whipped Serbian wild card Laslo Djere 6-3, 6-3 on the indoor hardcourts at Impact Arena. Lopez swatted nine aces in a routine 70-minute affair.
An upset came when Dutchman Igor Sijsling took out seventh-seeded veteran Finnish southpaw Jarkko Nieminen 6-3, 7-6 (7-2). Nieminen was the Bangkok runner-up in 2010.
One other Day-1 result saw the Netherlands' Robin Haase dismiss Spaniard Daniel Gimeno-Traver 6-2, 6-4.
The top seeds here are former Wimbledon runner-up Tomas Berdych, U.S. Open semifinalist and reigning Bangkok champ Richard Gasquet, Canadian slugger Milos Raonic, and last week's Metz, France, champion Gilles Simon, who lost to Gasquet in last year's Thailand Open finale and titled here back in 2009.
The 2013 Bangkok titlist will earn $102,450.
