MONTGOMERY COUNTY (WUSA9) -- The Recreation Department has cancelled its 'Pooch Pool Party' after a local outbreak of canine influenza, officials said.

Officials said in a press release,"In light of the canine flu that has shown up in Montgomery County, we are canceling the Pooch Pool Party scheduled at the Wheaton - Glenmont Pool. It is disappointing to have to cancel this popular event, but we feel it is the right decision to proactively protect our pets from the potential spread of the virus."

The dog flu was first reported on August 21. Two dogs died after 20 cases were reported.

A report published by the Maryland departments of Agriculture, Health and Mental Hygiene, and Natural Resources is attached with this story.

The 'Pooch Pool Party' was scheduled for September 7 and 8.
