Brookline, MA (Sports Network) - Stroke-play medallists Brady Watt and Neil Raymond both won a pair of matches on Thursday to advance to the quarterfinals of the U.S. Amateur Championship.
Watt downed Seth Reeves, 3 & 2, in his first match of the day before capturing a 2 & 1 decision over Charlie Hughes in the afternoon session, while Raymond earned a 2 & 1 victory over Zachary Olsen in the morning and edged Nathan Holman with a 1-up win during his second match.
Watt's opponent in the quarters will be Scottie Scheffler, who needed 20 holes to defeat Brandon Hagy in the morning before winning the final three holes against Matthias Schwab in the afternoon to advance by a 1-up margin.
Raymond, meanwhile, will face off against Corey Conners on Friday. Conners earned victories over Bryson Dechambeau and Patrick Rodgers by marks of 2 & 1 and 5 & 3, respectively.
The other quarterfinal matches will see Adam Ball against Matthew Fitzpatrick, who was the low amateur at the 2013 British Open, and Oliver Goss versus Brandon Matthews.
Ball captured his first match by a 2 & 1 edge over Max Orrin before cruising to a 6 & 5 win over Chelso Barrett. Fitzpatrick won a couple of 4 & 3 matches over Blake Morris and Gavin Hall.
Goss defeated Carr Vernon, 2-up, in his first tilt and then topped Xander Schauffele, 3 & 1, in his second, while Matthews won a 4 & 3 decision over Gavin Green and then earned a 3 & 2 win over Charlie Danielson.
The quarterfinals will be contested on Friday, with the semifinals to follow on Saturday. The championship will be completed with Sunday's 36-hole final.
