NORFOLK, Va. (AP) - The USS Harry S. Truman is deploying to the Middle East after being delayed for several months due to budget cuts.

The nuclear-powered aircraft carrier left its home port in Norfolk on Monday.

In February, plans for the Truman strike group to deploy to the Persian Gulf were canceled in an effort to save hundreds of millions of dollars in fuel, supplies and other costs. It was one of several moves made by the military to cut costs ahead of automatic-spending cuts known as sequestration that took effect March 1.

The strike group consists of the Truman, USS Gettysburg, USS Mason and USS San Jacinto.

The Navy says the Truman's deployment will last about nine months.
