WASHINGTON, DC (WUSA 9) --University of Maryland student, Ben Simonis one of the five outstanding nominees for the 2013 Do Something Awards. With over 1.6 million members, has been honoring the nations best young world-changers since 1996.

Founder of the Food Recovery Network,Simon has captured Do Something's attention with his determination and passion to empower his community. The Food Recovery Network takes leftover food from the dinning halls at the University of Maryland,donates it to the local soup kitchens and shelters for the many hungry people living right here in the community. 22 million pounds of food are wasted every year on college campuses across the U.S. Just 23 years old,Simon's organization has all ready created 19 college chapters across 11 states and has recovered 135,000 pounds of food.

On July 31st Ben and the four other nominees will be honored on the Do Something Awards Live on VH1. The grand prize winner with receive $100,000 for their cause. Be sure to vote for Ben for the $100,000 winner by texting BEN to 38383.
