WASHINGTON (WUSA9) - The National Park Service says next week it will light the Washington Monument in a special ceremony.
According to NPS,at 8 p.m. Monday officials willlight the Monument to mark a milestone in the work to restore it after the 2011 earthquake.
NPS officials said in a statement released on Friday that, "The decorative blue-gray scrim is designed to preserve the general shape of the Monument and replicate its marble blocks. The scrim will be illuminated from inside the scrim, making the Monument appear to glow in the dark."
The US Army Brass Quintet will play before the ceremony.
The ceremony is open to the public and will include remarks from officials.
The Washington Monument is scheduled to open in Spring 2014.
