The latest animated comedy from Steve Carell and his sidekick minions is on course for a big July Fourth weekend.

When it comes to box office, minions are mighty.

The jabbering yellow sidekicks ofDespicable Me 2powered the animated family film to a whopping $34.3 million on Wednesday, virtually guaranteeing it will run off with the lucrative July Fourth holiday weekend.

The opening day trounced Johnny Depp'sThe Lone Ranger, which limped into the holiday with $9.7 million.

Monsters Universitytook third place with $5.4 million, barely ahead of Melissa McCarthy's cop comedyThe Heatwith $5.2 million.

Full holiday weekend estimates are due Sunday.
