(AP)-- A lawyer representing the victim in the Steubenville rape case says Serena Williams has spoken with the girl's family after the tennis star was quoted in a Rolling Stone article saying the girl "shouldn't have put herself in that position."
Williams made the call Wednesday after releasing a statement describing the comments "insensitive and hurtful."
Attorney Bob Fitzsimmons said Thursday that Williams spoke with the family for about 30 minutes in a private conversation. Fitzsimmons says the family appreciated Williams' call.
Williams' comment was made in one paragraph of a long story posted online Tuesday about Williams. She is ranked No. 1 entering Wimbledon, which starts next week.
Two players from a high school football team in Steubenville, Ohio, were convicted in March of raping a drunken 16-year-old girl.
