A report released today byPrevent Blindness America describes the dramatic increase in total yearly cost of vision-related diseases. Researchers at the University of Chicago analyzed financial data regarding vision illness and discovered they are among the costliest health problems in the U.S.

Based on the research, the cost of treatment for vision-related diseases comes to an astounding total of 139 billion dollars per year. This total makes them more costly than some of the seven major chronic diseases.

Researchers say that these high costs for vision-related diseases will not go away. Actually, they are predicting that these illnesses will increase healthcare costs due to a large aging population.

Information like this will be used to to estimate current and growing costs of vision-related diseases. Also, that information will focus health providers on research and prevention of the illnesses as well as other health care options.
