TEMPLE HILLS, Md. (WUSA) -- A child is dead and a hit and run driver is on the run after a violent crash in Temple Hills Wednesday night.

Officer Nicole Hubbard, spokeswoman for the Prince George's County Police Department, says an SUV struck a minivan on Saint Barnabas Road around 9:45 p.m. According to Hubbard, the hispanic woman behind the wheel of the SUV fled the scene on foot while her male passenger stayed remained at the crash scene.

The three occupants of the minivan, including a female driver and two children, all sustained injuries. The woman and one of the children were taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, however the second child was transported in critical condition and later died.

The identity of the victim has not been released pending notification of next of kin.

Saint Barnabas Road was shut down at Temple Hills Road for several hours while police investigated the incident. The area has since reopened.

Officer Hubbard says the suspect driver is still on the loose, and the search for the woman is ongoing.
