WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- A D.C. councilman proposed seven initiatives in an effort to reform the city school system.
Councilman David Catania says he has a faster way to improve proficiency. His seven measures to reform education include giving poor students more money and principals more control of their budgets.
The mayor's office gained control over the city school system six years ago and Mayor Gray says some of Catania's initiatives are already in place. The mayor says he has a responsibility to run the school and that he's been doing just that and will continue to do so.
Some people think that the school system shouldn't be run by the city council.
Councilman Catania says that he is at least getting the education conversation going. He says these measures may not be perfect, and encourages community members to visit his website and share their input.
Catania will have several hearings before the council breaks for the summer.
