WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- The National Park Service launched a healthy food initiative on Thursday to provide visitors with healthier food options.
Healthy Park, Healthy People U.S. seeks to provide healthy and sustainable food choices to visitors, reduce the NPS's impact on the environment, and educate the public.
Russell Baratz, division executive chef for GSI, one of the concession providers, said visitors can have a sandwich and choice of a side all for under 600 calories.
Instead of hamburgers and french fries, visitors can have turkey wraps and apple wedges.
There's a new obligation to offer more educated park visitors the healthier options that they're seeking, Baratz said.
