ARLINGTON, Va. (WUSA9) -- Police say an 18-year-old man is dead after a skateboarding accident in Arlington Heights.

The victim, a student at Washington-Lee High School, was skateboarding down the street while hanging on to the side of a vehicle when he lost balance and fell, police say.

The accident happened this afternoon on the 300 block of S. Highland Street.

The man hit his head during the fall, causing significant head trauma. He was not wearing a helmet. He was in cardiac arrest when the paramedics arrived on the scene, officials say.

The vehicle was driven by a 17-year-old male, also a student at the same school. The driver remained at the scene. Police say that charges are pending.

The 300 block of S. Highland Street is closed for investigation.

Washington and Lee High School in Arlington County said in a statement on their website, "It is with a heavy heart that we share with you that Senior John Malvar passed away Tuesday afternoon at GW hospital. John was an incredible young man who contributed positively in many ways to our school and lives.
