LAUREL, Md. (WUSA9) -- Prince George's County fire officials say they are investigating nine fires as arsons.
According to officials,two recent fires were deemed "incendiary" and added toa list of fires under investigation in the Laurel area. Prince George's County Fire/Emergency Medical Services Department Office of the Fire Marshal personnel investigated the scenes of the fires that involved playground equipment and another at a long vacant restaurant. Investigators believe the two firesare similar toseven others that have been under investigation since March, say officials.
One of the recent fires happenedonMay 30 at about 3:35 p.m. onplayground equipment in the 14100 block of Bowsprit Lane. Investigators determined the playground equipment was set on fire, leaving an estimated $1,000 worth of damage. Shortly after midnight the next day, a fire was set in an exterior closet of the former Bay N' Surf Restaurant in the 14400 block of Baltimore Avenue. The restauranthad a significantfire in February of 2007 and has been closed and vacant ever since, according to officials.
The City of Laurel posted a reward of up to $10,000 for anyone that provides information that leads to the arrest and conviction of whoever may be responsible for the arsons.If you have information, then please call theArson Tip Line at 301-77-ARSON (301-772-7766).
The Prince George's County Fire/EMS Department, City of Laurel Police Department, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and police are all investigating.
