STAFFORD, Va. (WUSA9) -- The Stafford County Sheriff's OfficesaysDr. Nibedita Mohanty is charged with multiple offenses including involuntary manslaughter in relation to allegations that she over prescribed pain narcotics.
The54-year-olddoctor has been charged with 72 counts of Felony Distribution of a Schedule II Narcotic, 22 counts of Felony Obtaining Money by False Pretenses (involving insurance fraud) and 1 count of Involuntary Manslaughter, according to authorities.
The charges stem from an investigation focusing on the illicit distribution of prescription pain narcotics in Stafford County and nearby areas. Stafford Sheriff's Special Investigations Unit detectives found Mohanty was giving out"substantial quantities" of prescription pain narcotics "without appropriate medical oversight," say authorities, and some of her patients either personally abused the prescribed narcotics or re-distributed them for money.
Authorities say the involuntary manslaughtercharge stems from an overdose death directly related toherpractice of over prescribing pain narcotics.
Mohanty was arrested on Courthouse Road in Stafford County Friday morning, say police.
