LEBANON, Ill. (AP) - A former Marine in southwestern Illinois is asking for help finding two dogs he lost during flooding this week.
One of the animals is a therapy dog helping James Sperry cope with the post-traumatic stress disorder he suffers from as a result of an injury in Iraq.
Sperry told police his dogs jumped a fence at his home in Lebanon and he chased them into deep water but couldn't catch up with them.
The Belleville News-Democrat reports (http://bit.ly/Zp1Jja ) that the therapy dog is an Akita and Shar-Pei mix named Sophie. The other dog is a Doberman named Justice.
The newspaper says Sperry has suffered from migraine headaches and vertigo since a traumatic brain injury. A rocket-propelled grenade struck his helmet in November 2004 and exploded behind him, fracturing his skull.
