BETHESDA, Md. (WUSA9)-- Montgomery County Police are still looking for the driver who hit a woman and left her for dead last Friday in Bethesda.

It happened sometime before 9:30 pm near the intersection of Rockville Pike and Cedar Lane in front of the National Institute of Health.

35-year old Michelle De Sam was rushed to Suburban Hospital in critical condition. Her mother, Carmen Todd said her daughter has extensive head injuries and broken bones but is finally awake an conscious.

Todd said, "For a mother it's just heart breaking."

Police have no leads and believe because it was raining that night there may not have been any eyewitnesses. However, the victim's mother is staying optimistic hoping someone did see the hit and run and comes forward.

She said, "I just can't believe somebody can do that to another human being. She could have been dead."

De Sam is making progress, but is still in the ICU.
