Marrakesh, Morocco (Sports Network) - Third-seeded Alize Cornet reached the quarterfinals, while former French Open champion Francesca Schiavone posted a first-round victory Wednesday at the $235,000 Moroccan Grand Prix.
The Frenchwoman Cornet fought back to beat Italian qualifier Karin Knapp, 1-6, 7-5, 6-0 in 2 hours, 24 minutes, while the sixth-seeded Italian veteran Schiavone got past Croat Petra Martic 7-6 (10-8), 6-4 at the clay-court tennis event.
Schiavone's second-round opponent will be two-time Moroccan Grand Prix runner- up Simona Halep of Romania.
In other second-round action on Wednesday, South African Chanelle Scheepers drilled Spaniard Maria-Teresa Torro-Flor 6-2, 6-1.
And in some other opening-round play, Italian veteran Flavia Pennetta topped Hungarian Melinda Czink 6-1, 7-6 (7-2), Kazakhstan's Yulia Putintseva dropped France's Mathilde Johansson 6-3, 6-4, and Russian Olga Puchkova stopped Slovakian veteran Daniela Hantuchova 3-6, 7-6 (7-5), 7-5. Pennetta is rewarded with a second-round match against reigning Moroccan Grand Prix champion Kiki Bertens, who bested Spaniard Laura Pous Tio in last year's finale, in Fes.
