WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- First of all, I liked what the President said but I love the way he said it, passionately.

This may have been in the Rose Garden but for a minute there, the president was like the guy next to you in a bar arguing politics with his finger in your chest.

Ironically however, this is one time when passion doesn't translate into votes, especially when the gun control side didn't have enough of either.

Sure, the president is right to say that nine out of 10Americansfavor national background checks for gun buyers. But Gallup says only four percent think gun control is one of our top problems. In other words the support is wide but not deep.

The president is also right when he called out his opponents, saying they quote "caved to the pressure and started looking for an excuse, any excuse, to say no."

But in politics you only complain about pressure when the other guy has you in a tight spot. No doubt, universal background checks are a reasonable idea and the President cared deeply about winning this fight.

But let's be real, this is politics where what most people are passionate about is getting re-elected. And that's gonna trump reasonable every time.
