Detroit, MI (Sports Network) - The Detroit Red Wings signed goaltender Jimmy Howard to a six-year contract extension on Tuesday.

The deal is reportedly worth $31.8 million, according to TSN.ca.

Howard, who is playing in the final season of a two-year, $4.5 million contract, has posted a 17-12-6 record with a 2.31 GAA, .920 save percentage and three shutouts this season for the Red Wings, who are fighting to make the playoffs.

"Jimmy is one of our most valuable players who is entering the prime of his career. He gives a chance to win every night," Red Wings general manager Ken Holland said.

The 29-year-old has a 127-66-25 record with a 2.39 GAA and .917 save percentage in 228 career games with Detroit.
