WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- Lawmakers will be representing their parties in the annual Congressional baseball game at Nationals Park on June 13. The Republicans have a lot to prove this year on the field. The Democrats have won the Congressional Baseball Game the lastfour years. This year, the GOP wants to win the big trophy in front of thebig audience.

The games date back to 1909 and are now sponsored by the CQ Roll Call. Founder Sid Yudain brought baseball back in 1961 after Speaker Sam Rayburn of Texas ended the game in 1958,reportedlysaying it was caused too many injuries. But CQ ROLL editor in Chief David Rapp says it was actually because theDemocrats were beating the Republicans badly.

It is a friendly rivalry, a chance for family members to meet and Congress members to mingle in a less "confrontational" setting.Thegameis all for the community --the Washington Literacy Council and Boys and Girls Club receive proceeds from the event.
