ODENTON, Md. (WUSA9) -- Three people died in a single-car crash just after midnight Sunday morning. One person remains in the hospital fighting for his life.

All three who died are 22-years-old.

"First of all, I lost a friend, a shipmate, it's unfortunate it's so soon. He was going to do great things, very, very smart,"Brice Banks said.

Brice Banks is not only Sam Schindler's neighbor but encouraged Sam to enter the military.

"I saw him off and remember how proud I was. I was glad to see that was the direction he was taking. He said, because of you I joined the Navy."

Sam was stationed in Norfolk and was home for Easter weekend.
He was out with his best friend and airman David D'augustine, friend Michael Phillip and his cousin Katherine Warrington.

The four were returning home, just a mile away from Sam's house on Piney Orchard Parkway around 12:30 a.m. on Easter Sunday.

Police say Sam's best friend was driving when he hit a pole, a tree, rolled over and hit another tree. They were all trapped inside. Police say speed was a factor.

"I realize, oh wow, I sat next to them in class. I was a guidance aid I saw these people all the time and to know they're gone is insane,"Krista Weissmer, a former high school classmate.

The sole survivor, 23-year-old Michael Lee Phillips is in the hospital in critical condition.

"My hearts with him especially being the only survivor. My hearts with the families. It sucks that their Easter is plagued by pain,"Weissmer said.

The three men were high school buddies at Anne Arundel High School.

The Sailor who wrote in his senior year book 'I hope in 10 years I have a good job I love, was on his way to fulfilling his dream.

"He's like family. The lost goes beyond the uniform it transcends it's like losing a brother,"Banks said.

"The was a really good kid. He made sure to say high to everyone. It's going to be hard,"said Yesenia Banks, a friend.
