GERMANTOWN, Md. (WUSA9) -- A family is displaced and lost their two dogs when their townhouse went up in flames on Saturday, officials say.

The two-alarm fire took place at about 3:30 p.m. at the 19300 block of Elderberry Terrace in Germantown, the Montgomery County Fire Dept. said.

When crews arrived all three-floors of the home were engulfed in flames. An adult and a child were able to get out safely but their two dogs weren't' able to get out and died, officials said.

Fire officials say there is approximately $200,000 worth in damages.

The Red Cross is assisting the family with shelter. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
