WASHINGTON, D.C. (WUSA) -- This mix of snow and rain left accumulations of wet, mushy, and heavy snow in parts of the outer metro region.

It is the kind of snow that can cause cardiovascular and back problems while shoveling if you are not in shape.

Dr. Ronald Childs, M.D., Medical Director of theInova Spine Instituteexplainsto Anita Brikman the toll heavy snow can have on the body. TheInova system is serving some of the hardest hit areas in our region. Areas west of the metro into Loundon County received up to a foot of heavy, wet snow.

Anita: Some parts of the Inova system got some serious snow and that brings up some health concerns.

Dr. Childs: Absolutely, one of the things you worry about with heavy snowfall is backstrains which is a very common injury and one of the most common reasons that people will come to the emergency room.
