WASHINGTON (WUSA9) --First the good: a spokesperson for the 6,000 Smithsonian Museum workers, most of them in the DC area, says there will be no furloughs and no reduced hours for the local museums come March 1.
If there is no sequestration budget agreement between Congress and the White House the Smithsonian said there will be a hiring freeze, delayed maintenance and construction and reduced travel in order to meet a mandated $40 million in sequester cuts.
Forthousands of other federal workers its unclear what will happen beginningMarch first to avoid a package of $85 billion in mandated across the board spending cuts.
On Tuesday, outside several federal office buildings in Southwest DC federal workers told me they had not been given instructions onwhen furloughs could begin.
There is no way of knowingat this point if workers will be be forced to take up to 20 days by the end of the current fiscal year on September 30th. That could result ina 20% pay cut for employees.
