Norfolk, VA (Sports Network) - DeShawn Painter netted 18 points to lead the Old Dominion Monarchs to an 84-61 rout of the UNC Wilmington Seahawks in a Colonial Athletic Association tilt at the Constant Convocation Center.
Dimitri Batten shot 6-of-9 en route to 15 points for ODU (4-23, 2-13 CAA), while Richard Ross, Aaron Bacote and Keenan Palmore all scored 12 points.
Craig Ponder tallied 16 points for UNCW (10-17, 5-10), while Keith Rendleman contributed a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Cedrick Williams and Chris Dixon added 12 and 10 points, respectively.
ODU used a 21-6 run midway through the first half to take control after the score was knotted at 16-16 early on. The Monarchs shot 55.6 percent from the field in the opening period, while UNCW hit just 33.3 percent of its shots. ODU led 37-26 at halftime.
A Dixon triple at the 16:00 mark of the second half brought UNCW back to within nine but that is as close as it would get. ODU controlled the paint in the final period, outscoring UNCW 26-12 down low.
ODU forced 15 turnovers while coughing the ball up just eight times. It also assisted on 23 of 33 field goals.
